Offley
OFFLEY, A GENERAL BRAND.
The Offley Port Wine Producer's history is as rich and flavorful as the wines they produce. Founded in London by William Offley in the 1730s, the company initially operated as a wine trading business. The turning point came when Joseph James Forrester, a notable mapmaker and port wine enthusiast, joined the company. Forrester devoted his life to improving the production of port wine and mapping the Douro region, earning a baron title from the King of Portugal.
Over the centuries, Offley has remained committed to innovation and quality. These values, paired with a deep respect for tradition, have made Offley a well-regarded name in the port wine industry.
Offley Port wines are admired for their consistent quality and signature style. Characterized by their richness, elegance, and robust flavor profile, they are meticulously crafted to offer a captivating tasting experience. Expect vibrant red fruit flavors in their Ruby Ports, nutty complexity in their Tawny Ports, and intense, concentrated fruitiness in their Vintage Ports.
The VINIFICATION of Offley Port involves rigorous selection of the finest grapes, primarily Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Nacional. Following manual harvesting, the grapes are gently crushed and fermented with careful temperature control. Fermentation is halted by the addition of grape spirit, creating a fortified wine with an alcohol percentage around 20%. The sugar percentage varies across their range, with their Ruby and Vintage Ports having more residual sugar compared to the dryer Tawny Ports.
The aging process depends on the style of port. Ruby Ports spend a few years in oak vats while Tawny Ports spend longer, allowing them to gain their characteristic nutty complexity. Vintage Ports, produced only in exceptional years, are aged for two years before bottling and can age in bottle for decades.
VINEYARD PRACTICES
Offley adopts meticulous vineyard practices to ensure the highest quality grapes. Vines are pruned carefully and at the right time to control yield and ensure optimal ripeness. The steep slopes of the Douro Valley, challenging terrain, and diverse microclimates contribute to the distinctive character of Offley Ports.
