WARRE’S PORT - THE ELEGANT WINE

Established in 1670, Warre's holds the prestigious distinction of being the earliest British Port company initiated in Portugal. Deeply entwined with the narrative of Port, Warre's has been at the forefront of the Port trade, delivering some of the most exceptional Ports across more than three centuries.

In 1905, Andrew James Symington, known as 'AJS', joined Warre’s as a partner, and by 1908, he had assumed sole ownership. George Warre, although involved with Quinta do Bomfim for Dow’s, held no shares in the company his ancestors founded. However, in 1912, an exchange of shares with AJS led to George Warre regaining a stake in Warre’s, and concurrently, AJS acquired a role in Dow’s Port, taking over the management of the Douro Quintas. By the 1950s, the Warre family relinquished their shares in Warre’s and Dow’s, leaving the Symingtons as the exclusive proprietors.

Continuing to uphold its esteemed reputation, Warre’s is celebrated as a superior producer of Vintage Ports. The extraordinary quality of the wines is guaranteed by Warre’s own vineyards: Quinta da Cavadinha in the Pinhão Valley, Quinta do Retiro in the Rio Torto Valley, and Quinta da Telhada nestled deep upriver in the Douro Superior.

FLAVOUR PROFILE

When discussing Warre's Vintage Ports, the notion of elegance is frequently invoked. Whether hailing from the 19th, 20th, or 21st century, Warre’s Vintages consistently present floral nuances and a refined finesse on the palate, exuding a delicate, feminine allure. The unique sophistication and balance of Warre’s Vintage Ports are unparalleled. Their flavor profiles are underpinned by lively acidity, owing to the cool Cavadinha vineyard. Although inviting when young, Warre’s Vintage Ports evolve beautifully in the bottle and maintain their excellence for numerous decades.

QUINTAS

Warre’s vineyards are spread across the diverse landscapes of the Upper Douro Valley, representing a broad array of the region's micro-climates. Each quinta carries distinct attributes, shaped by variations in altitude, exposure, slopes, grape variety diversity, vine age, and soil composition. This rich diversity enables each property to contribute unique elements to Warre’s Vintage Ports.

Quinta da Cavadinha in the Pinhão Valley and Quinta do Retiro in the Rio Torto Valley form the main structure of Warre’s Vintage Ports. Cavadinha's altitude and east-facing orientation lead to a cooler ripening period, mirrored in the floral elegance of its wines. The cool conditions also promote beneficial acidity, imparting freshness and delicacy. Quinta do Retiro has been a crucial ingredient in Warre’s Vintage Ports for a long time. The ancient, mixed vineyards host up to 30 to 40 different varieties, many nearly a century old. These vineyards yield sparingly, less than half a kilogram per vine, imbuing extraordinary complexity and structure to Warre’s Vintages. Quinta da Telhada, located in the remote, arid Douro Superior subregion, provides mature Touriga Nacional plantings that yield well-ripened fruit.
