Quinta da Silveira: Upholding Traditions, Inspiring the Future

In the heart of the Douro region lies Quinta da Silveira, a winery of notable history and significant contribution to the production of high-quality Port and Douro wines. Founded in 1851 by King's adviser António Caetano d'Oliveira, the Quinta has evolved under a legacy that embodies quality, honesty, and environmental preservation.

A Rich History

António Caetano d'Oliveira acquired lands in the Vilariça Valley and founded Quinta da Silveira in 1851. The establishment of the winery's warehouses, granite cellar, and the first structure of the property followed in 1879. Over the years, the Quinta has been under the diligent management of successive generations, all dedicated to preserving the legacy of their ancestors and extending the notoriety of their exceptional wines.

In 1973, the estate passed to the three grandchildren of Júlia de Oliveira Martinho, resulting in a series of transformative changes. Through a family business formed by the siblings, Sociedade Agrícola Vale da Vilariça, Lda., the property saw the restructuring of vineyards, modernization of the winery, and introduction of innovative production philosophies.

Mission, Vision, and Values

Quinta da Silveira's mission is to honor the hard work of their ancestors by continually producing high-quality Port and Douro wines. Their vision is to maintain the tradition and quality of Douro Superior wines while surprising consumers with unique wines in an increasingly homogeneous oenological world. They firmly believe in operating on principles of quality, honesty, and friendliness, with a keen focus on environmental protection and workers' interests.

Vineyard Practices

Quinta da Silveira and its associate, Quinta do Tourão, stretch over approximately 70 hectares of vineyards, with two primary soil types—granite shale and alluvial soil. The varying terrain, profile, sun exposure, and altitude across different parts of the vineyards create multiple distinct "terroirs". This diversity allows for the cultivation of a wide array of grape varieties, including white grape varieties such as Rabigato, Códega do Larinho, Malvasia Fina, Viosinho, Gouveio, Arinto, and Síria, and red grape varieties like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Amarela, and Sousão.

The vineyards employ sustainable practices such as grasses and leguminous grasses for weed control and nitrogen supply, thus eliminating the need for herbicides. They also leverage irrigation opportunities in the valley.

Winemaking and Technical Details

The beautiful winery at Quinta da Silveira, built in 1879, houses seven "lagares" where the winemaking process takes place, including foot treading. The property maintains the basic characteristics of work in "lagares", complemented with modern enhancements such as refrigeration and new machinery.

The winemaking process at Quinta da Silveira is overseen by oenologists Manuel Maria Martinho and Rodrigo Martins, both graduates from esteemed institutions and holders of Master's degrees in Viticulture and Oenology. Their diverse educational backgrounds blend tradition with innovation, contributing significantly to the vineyard's outstanding viticulture and oenology.

Quinta da Silveira Wines and Gastronomic Pairings

Quinta da Silveira's selection includes Port wines aged in wooden casks and French oak barrels, as well as DOC Douro wines. Each wine captures the essence of the terroir, providing a unique experience that offers the perfect accompaniment to a range of gastronomic delights.
