Miguel's Portwine: A Tapestry of Passion and Tradition

Who They Are

Rooted deeply in family traditions that trace back to 1926, Miguel's Portwine has etched its mark in the world of winemaking. Their journey, rich in legacy, has been steered by a mission: to create wines that intricately reveal the nuances, with the vineyards as their muse. Over 91 years, their commitment has borne fruit, resulting in wines that are a testament to their undying passion.

Spanning the famed wine regions of Douro and Port, Dão, and Bairrada, their estates exude tradition. With an experienced family team guiding the winemaking process, they have mastered both conventional and organic wines of outstanding caliber. Their repertoire boasts of traditional Port wines - Tawny, Ruby, White, and Rosé, extending to aged blends marking 10, 20, 30, and 40 years. Beyond this, they present an exquisite selection of old Port wines, encompassing colheitas and vintages.

Their Vineyards and Philosophy

To them, the vine, in all its strength and form, embodies integrity and an unwavering foundation. Like the vine, they too draw strength from nature. This connection bestows upon them joy, fulfillment, and a distinct direction. Their essence is rejuvenated as they tread their chosen path.

Their prized Douro vineyard, nestled in Ferradosa, S. J. Pesqueira, is a manifestation of this bond with nature. Initiated in 1845 by the Baron of Seixo, the vineyard stretches over 200 hectares. It lies in perfect harmony between the river and mountain, cradled by slopes that merge seamlessly with the river. The schist-rich soil nurtures vines that are classified under the elite 'A' category, the zenith of the Douro scale. Their grape varieties are meticulously chosen, encapsulating the very spirit of the region and are proficient in producing both Port and Douro wines. Dominant varieties include Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz, supplemented by Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão. Their white grape array features Malvasia Fina, Rabigato, Códega, and Viosinho.

The Essence of Miguel's Wines

  • Age Designation: Their age-designated Port wines, especially the 10, 20, 30, and over 40-year-old variants, exude quality. The Tawny and Ruby variants resonate with the hues they are named after. Their Rosé Port, a novel addition, stands out with its freshness and versatility. Their White Ports, varying in sweetness, seamlessly transition from aperitifs to desserts.

  • Colheita: Representing a singular harvest, these are superior quality Tawny Ports, aged in wood for at least seven years. During this time, the wine metamorphoses, acquiring an aromatic bouquet rich in dried fruits, wood, and spices.

  • Vintage: Deemed the monarch of Port wines, the Vintage is a celebration of a unique harvest. This deep, full-bodied red wine mellows over time, refining its character.

  • LBV (Late Bottled Vintage): An amalgamation of wines from a designated harvest, LBV Port wines stand out for their quality and aging potential. Within this category, the "Envelhecido em garrafa" or Bottle Matured Port ages for a minimum of three years in the bottle, enriching its flavor palette.

Their Vision and Invitation

Miguel's places paramount importance on human values and relationships. Each bottle is a salute to the relentless dedication of their winemakers and farmers. Their aspiration is to transform every partner, customer, and employee into a cherished friend. The experience they offer transcends mere wine tasting; it invites one to delve into the landscapes, heritage, and history, captivating all five senses.

In essence, Miguel's Portwine extends an invitation: To partake in their narrative, their heritage, and their forthcoming chapters. To embark on a spirited sojourn and, together, herald many more epochs of excellence.
