Prtwine was founded by Ruud Scholten, a Port wine specialist and author with over a decade of experience in the wine industry. He is also the author of The Portologist: Crafting Port Wine Cocktails.

What is Port Wine?
Port is a fortified wine produced exclusively in the Douro Valley in Portugal, regulated by the IVDP. Grape spirit is added during fermentation to stop the process and preserve natural sugars, resulting in a wine that is rich, complex, and typically sweet.

What are the main styles of Port?
The main styles are Ruby (young, fruity, aged in steel), Tawny (aged in small oak casks, nutty and caramel notes), White Port (dry to sweet, great for cocktails), Vintage Port (declared in exceptional years, bottle-aged for decades), LBV or Late Bottled Vintage (single year, ready to drink), and Colheita (single-harvest Tawny aged a minimum of 7 years in wood).

How long does Port Wine last after opening?
Ruby Port keeps for 2 to 4 months refrigerated. Tawny Port keeps up to 4 months. White Port keeps for 2 to 4 months. Vintage Port should ideally be consumed within 3 to 5 days of opening.

Does Port wine need to be decanted?
Vintage Ports and Crusted Ports should be decanted because they develop sediment during bottle aging. Other styles generally do not need decanting.

How should I store Port wine?
Unopened bottles should be stored in a cool dark place, ideally around 15°C. Vintage Ports stored on their side. After opening, keep refrigerated and recork tightly.
