Quinta do Vallado: Tradition and Innovation in Douro Valley

Located in the heart of Douro Valley, Quinta do Vallado is a prestigious estate that marries traditional winemaking methods with modern innovation. With a winemaking history dating back to 1716, this estate is renowned for producing remarkable Port wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region.

Quinta do Vallado: A Legacy of Excellence

Since its establishment, Quinta do Vallado has built a legacy that echoes through the corridors of Portuguese winemaking history. Initially owned by the legendary Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, the "Ferreirinha", the estate has been passed down through generations and is now in the hands of the Ferreira family descendants. Today, the winery blends the best of tradition with an innovative approach to craft exceptional Port wines.

Characteristics of Quinta do Vallado Ports

Quinta do Vallado offers a diverse range of Port wines, each expressing the distinctive characteristics of the Douro Valley terroir. The Vallado Adelaide Vintage Ports and the aged Tawny Ports are particularly noteworthy.

The Vallado Adelaide Vintage Ports, crafted from a blend of traditional grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz, offer rich and complex profiles. These wines display an intense concentration of ripe dark fruits, balanced by spice and floral notes. As the wine ages, it develops a complex palate of earthy and savory nuances, adding layers of complexity to the flavor profile.

The aged Tawny Ports, including the notable Vallado Adelaide Tributa, a rare 100-year-old Tawny, reveal a different facet of Port wine. They possess a delicate balance of dried fruit, honey, and nutty flavors, with a vibrant acidity adding freshness and longevity.

Technical Details

The vineyards of Quinta do Vallado are primarily planted with traditional Portuguese grape varieties, which are hand-harvested and meticulously sorted. Quinta do Vallado uses traditional vinification techniques, such as foot treading in lagares, combined with state-of-the-art technology to ensure the quality of their wines.

Most Port wines from Quinta do Vallado are bottled in the classic 750ml format, but special editions might feature different sizes. Detailed technical information like Baume levels, alcohol percentage, and grape composition are available in the winery's technical notes.

Gastronomic Suggestions

Quinta do Vallado's Ports offer versatile pairing possibilities. The Vallado Adelaide Vintage Ports, with their complex and robust profile, pair beautifully with intense cheeses like Roquefort, or rich desserts such as a chocolate fondant. The aged Tawny Ports, with their nutty and caramelized profile, can complement a pear tart tatin, crème brûlée, or a selection of fine blue cheeses.

Vineyard Practices

Quinta do Vallado places great emphasis on sustainable viticulture practices, focusing on preserving the unique characteristics of the Douro Valley. The challenging terrain demands much manual labor, with traditional methods being preserved to maintain the integrity of the vineyards.

Through the harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, Quinta do Vallado continues to craft exquisite Port wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the Douro Valley, standing as a testament to the enduring appeal of Portuguese wine.

  • QUINTA DO VALLADO RÉGUA

Quinta do Vallado’s 65 hectares of vineyard are planted in south and west facing slopes of schist soil, with altitudes ranging between 80 and 400 meters.

Of these, 55 hectares are comprised of vineyards planted in the 1990s, mostly in single row terraces, pruned according to the double cordon system, and with one variety only in each plot.

The remaining 10 hectares are formed by very old vineyards planted between 1920 and 1950, amongst which Vinha da Granja (1929) and Vinha da Coroa (1958) stand out. These are planted in continuous rows, 1,2 meters apart and with 1,1 meters between each plant, following the natural contours of the land. They have a density of 7.200 plants/ha.

One of the main assets that Quinta do Vallado inherited from past generations are the old vineyards. These vineyards have enormous potential to produce outstanding wines.
