NIEPOORT: A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE IN THE DOURO VALLEY

THE NIEPOORT DYNASTY

Niepoort is a name that resonates with tradition, quality, and innovation in the Douro Valley. Established in 1842 by Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort, the company has been a family-run operation for six generations. The Niepoort family's dedication to producing exceptional Port and DOC Douro wines is a testament to their passion for winemaking and their deep-rooted connection to the Douro Valley.

The Niepoort legacy began with Franciscus Marius and was carried forward by his descendants, each generation contributing to the growth and success of the company. Eduard Karel Jackob, the second generation, maintained the high standards set by his father, ensuring the continued success of the family business. His son, Eduard Marius, took over at the age of 22, bringing a scientific approach to the winemaking process.

Eduard Marius's son, Eduard Rudolf van der Niepoort, known as Rolf, was a bon vivant who brought a relaxed and generous spirit to the business. Rolf's son, Eduard Dirk van der Niepoort, is the current leader of the family business. Dirk's children, Daniel, Marco, and Ana, are following in their father's footsteps, ensuring that the Niepoort legacy continues to thrive.

THE NIEPOORT VINEYARDS

Niepoort's vineyards are located in the heart of the Douro Valley, a region renowned for its unique terroir and ideal climatic conditions for viticulture. The vineyards, spread across 62 hectares of organic land divided between Quinta de Nápoles and Quinta do Carril, are planted with indigenous grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Barroca. The vineyards' diverse geographic characteristics, including altitudes between 100m and 500m, exposure to all cardinal points, and shale soils with clay fragments, contribute to the unique qualities of their wines.

NIEPOORT'S PORT AND DOURO DOC WINES

Niepoort is renowned for its exceptional portfolio of Port and DOC Douro wines. Each wine is a reflection of the family's commitment to quality and tradition, encapsulating the essence of the Douro Valley's terroir. From the robust and complex Vintage Ports to the elegant and balanced DOC Douro wines, each bottle offers a unique tasting experience.

INNOVATION AND TRADITION

At Niepoort, innovation and tradition go hand in hand. The winemaking process involves traditional practices such as manual harvesting and foot treading in granite lagares, combined with modern techniques and technologies. This blend of old and new allows Niepoort to produce wines of exceptional quality that carry the family's legacy and the spirit of the Douro Valley.

THE NIEPOORT AND NOGUEIRA FAMILIES

The Niepoort family's success is also intertwined with the Nogueira family, who have been part of the company for five generations. The art of the Master Blender has been passed down from father to son, with José Rodrigo Nogueira currently holding this important role. His father, José Nogueira, worked at Niepoort for over 50 years and was one of Dirk's greatest teachers.

  • Niepoort's Tawny Ports, for instance, are celebrated for their sophistication and their wonderful balance between sweetness and acidity. They exhibit a range of dried fruit and nut flavors, with a characteristic toasty, caramel note from the prolonged cask aging.

Their Vintage Ports, on the other hand, are full-bodied and robust, with powerful fruit expression and great aging potential. They're recognized for their intense concentration and complexity, offering a palette of dark fruits, spices, and often with a mineral undertone.
