HISTORY OF QUINTA DO NOVAL
Quinta do Noval is one of the oldest and most illustrious houses in the Douro Valley, with a history that traces back to 1715. However, it was after being acquired by António José da Silva in 1894 that the estate began to gain its reputation for exceptional port wines. Silva transformed the vineyard, rebuilt the estate, and established the Noval brand in the international market.
The Quinta's fame was solidified in 1931, when it declared a Vintage Port in a year that was not universally declared by other producers. The result, the legendary Quinta do Noval Nacional 1931, is still considered one of the greatest ports ever produced. Made from a small parcel of ungrafted vines - hence the 'Nacional' - this remarkable wine solidified Quinta do Noval's place in the history of port wine.
In 1993, Quinta do Noval was acquired by AXA Millésimes, a significant player in fine wines from vineyards in regions like Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Languedoc in France. Under the guidance of Christian Seely, Noval has continued to honor its rich past while also embracing innovation. Quinta do Noval has persistently maintained a strategy of investing in its vineyards and winery while simultaneously pursuing perfection in the art of port wine making.
