Caves Santa Marta: Unfolding the Narrative of Douro Valley's Viticultural Excellence

The Emergence of Caves Santa Marta

Situated in Santa Marta de Penaguião, also known as "Terras de Penaguião," a region distinguished as part of the original Pombaline demarcation decreed in 1756 for quality Feitoria wines, the story of Caves Santa Marta began. Two centuries later, in 1959, a group of local grape growers discontented with the region's viticultural reality took a leap of faith. They believed cooperative work was the best way to promote their principal product – the Wine, and thus, the Adega Cooperativa de Santa Marta was born. Their aim was to aid regional farmers in producing and selling wine, maintaining the well-kept vineyards of the demarcated region, and elevating the territory's status while increasing their income.

The Union of Cooperatives

In 1960, the cooperative cellars of Cumieira and Medrões were established in the county. These three cellars commercially united in the seventies and officially merged in 1987, leading to the birth of the renowned Caves Santa Marta. This merger set the stage for the enterprise to grow and elevate the quality of its wines to new heights.

The Cooperative Philosophy

Just like all cooperatives, the members of Caves Santa Marta are vineyard owners who deliver their grapes to the cooperative for wine production and marketing. The ownership of Caves Santa Marta rests with its members (approximately twelve hundred in number). Together, they play a vital role in upholding the prestige of the cooperative's brand.

Wines and Port Styles

Caves Santa Marta stands as a testament to the cooperative's commitment to crafting a wide range of wines, especially the distinguished Port wines. Balancing tradition with innovation, the cooperative's winemaking philosophy draws upon a deep understanding of the region's unique terroir and grape varieties. The resulting Ports radiate with elegance, depth, and complexity, echoing the richness of the Douro Valley.

Technical Details

Caves Santa Marta prides itself on its nuanced understanding of indigenous grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, and Tinta Barroca. Each variety imparts a distinct characteristic to the wines, enhancing their personality and depth. Upholding regional winemaking traditions, the cooperative emphasizes manual harvesting, foot treading in traditional lagares, and fermentation under controlled temperatures. The addition of grape spirit fortifies the wines, leading to the unique style of Port.

Vineyard Practices

Caves Santa Marta follows viticultural practices that pay homage to the delicate balance of traditional methods and modern viticulture. The steep, terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley require intensive manual work, reflecting the vineyard owners' profound respect for the land. These practices aim to maintain the region's unique ecosystem while promoting sustainability and biodiversity.

Gastronomic Suggestions

The Port wines from Caves Santa Marta offer a delightful pairing experience. The Tawny Port, with its notes of nuts and dried fruits, complements aged cheeses perfectly, while the robust Ruby Port pairs well with dark chocolate desserts. The powerful and complex Vintage Port pairs wonderfully with blue cheeses and robust meat dishes.

The Vision Behind the Winemaking

Caves Santa Marta continues to embody the vision of its founders by producing high-quality wines that reflect the rich heritage of the Douro Valley. The head winemaker oversees every step of the winemaking process, ensuring that each bottle encapsulates the cooperative's commitment to quality.

In conclusion, Caves Santa Marta represents a successful blend of tradition, quality, sustainability, and innovative winemaking practices. Their exquisite Ports are more than just wines; they are a celebration of the region’s viticultural heritage, upheld by a community of passionate winegrowers.
