Martha's Wine and Spirits: Preserving a Legacy in the Heart of Douro Valley

Martha's Family Legacy

Martha's Wine and Spirits, at its heart, is a story of the Marta family, whose lineage traces back to the first quarter of the 18th century, specifically to the year 1727. As one of the oldest families in Douro, they have dedicated several generations to grape cultivation and sale to export houses. The production of the so-called "fine wine" began in the early 20th century and was initially sold in barrels to the companies of V.N. Gaia. However, in 1956, a significant milestone was achieved when they bottled Port Wine under their family name for the first time.

Subsequent generations have wholeheartedly committed themselves to the wine business, ensuring the quality and distinction of the product. The current generations leading the company have taken a decisive step by expanding and consolidating the family business on an international scale. The family has always managed every process, from grape cultivation to production and bottling. Today, they offer an extensive selection of Port wines, Douro wines, and spirits.

The Marta Vineyards

Presently, the Marta family owns vineyards in Santa Marta de Penaguião. The diversity of these vineyard areas allows for the plantation of noble grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Amarela, and Tinta Roriz, as well as Malvasia Fina, Viosinho, Donzelinho, Gouveio, Códega do Larinho, Arinto, Rabigato, Moscatel Galego, among others.

Port Wine Specialties

Martha's Wine and Spirits has a rich portfolio of Port wines, a tradition that has been fine-tuned over centuries. Their portfolio boasts of Ruby, Tawny, White, and Vintage Ports, each bearing a testament to the family's commitment to quality, tradition, and the unique terroir of the Douro Valley.

Tradition Meets Modernity

The winemaking process at Martha's Wine and Spirits beautifully blends the traditional practices of the region with modern viticulture advancements. The family still maintains manual harvesting and foot treading in stone lagares, while also implementing controlled temperature fermentation. After the addition of grape spirit, the wine is fortified and bottled, primarily in standard 750ml bottles, with occasional special editions in unique sizes.

Culinary Partnerships

Martha's Port wines offer versatility, providing a delightful pairing experience for a myriad of dishes. The Tawny Port, with its rich tones of nuts and dried fruits, pairs excellently with aged cheeses. The Ruby Port, robust and complex, is a perfect companion for dark chocolate desserts. The Vintage Port, known for its power and complexity, wonderfully complements rich blue cheeses and hearty meat dishes.

The Martha's Leadership

The Marta family's ongoing commitment to their craft is evident in their dedication to preserving quality and distinction in their products. Every step of the process, from the vine to the bottle, is meticulously overseen, ensuring that each bottle of Port carries the family's legacy and the indomitable spirit of the Douro Valley.

In conclusion, Martha's Wine and Spirits embodies a perfect blend of tradition, quality, sustainability, and innovation. Each Port wine is not just a beverage, but a celebration of the rich viticultural heritage of the Douro Valley. The Marta family's passion and dedication shine through each sip, making every bottle a testament to their legacy.
