Quinta do Pôpa: The Epitome of Artisanal Port Wine
Tucked away in the illustrious Douro Valley is Quinta do Pôpa, a family-owned winery renowned for its artisanal production of top-tier Port wine. Established by the Ferreira family, the Quinta embodies a heartwarming story of passion, dedication, and an enduring love for the land.
Quinta do Pôpa: Realizing A Dream
Quinta do Pôpa is the realization of Francisco Ferreira's lifelong dream – to own a quintessential vineyard in the Douro Valley. Today, his children honor his memory by meticulously tending to the vineyard and crafting exquisite Ports that are as unique as they are memorable.
Characteristics of Quinta do Pôpa Port
At Quinta do Pôpa, the creation of their signature Ports involves a careful selection of the best batches from their vineyards. These include an array of luscious Vintage Ports & wines. Each wine crafted under the Quinta do Pôpa label exhibits a profound respect for the terroir and embodies the characteristic richness of the Douro Valley.
Their Vintage Ports are revered for their powerful intensity, robust structure, and the palate brimming with dark fruits, spices, and cocoa undertones. Over time, these wines gracefully mature, developing a captivating complexity and an impressive array of secondary flavors.
Technical Details
Quinta do Pôpa produces its Ports from a medley of native Portuguese grape varieties flourishing in the exceptional terroir of the Douro Valley. The roster includes Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, and Tinta Barroca.
The vinification involves traditional foot-treading in lagares, followed by controlled fermentation, and fortification with grape spirit to achieve the distinctive profile of Port wine. Available in various bottle sizes, each with detailed technical aspects such as Baume, alcohol content, and grape composition, these Ports are an epitome of quality and precision.
Gastronomic Suggestions
When it comes to food pairing, Quinta do Pôpa's Ports provide a plethora of choices. Their powerful Vintage Ports are the perfect match for strong, blue-veined cheeses or a rich, dark chocolate mousse. The Tawny Ports, with their characteristic nutty undertones, compliment 'Leite-creme', a Portuguese take on crème brûlée. The LBV Ports can be enjoyed alongside a traditional 'Bacalhau à Brás', a delightful dish of salted cod, potatoes, and eggs.
Vineyard Practices
The vineyard practices at Quinta do Pôpa reflect a profound respect for the land and the local grape varieties. Despite the challenging topography of the Douro Valley, most of the vineyard work is carried out manually to preserve the integrity of the vines and the soil.
Guiding the winemaking process is the esteemed Luis Pato, whose hands-on approach and commitment to quality have played a pivotal role in shaping the unique character of Quinta do Pôpa's Ports.
Quinta do Pôpa's journey symbolizes the fulfilling of a dream, and the creation of Ports that echo the heart and soul of the Douro Valley. Their commitment to tradition, combined with a forward-thinking approach to winemaking, continues to cement their place as a respected producer in the realm of Port wine.

2017 Vintage: The wine-growing 2016-2017 year was characterized as a year of high climatic uniqueness, having been an extremely hot and dry year. The harvest of 2017 was the earliest in memory, anticipating 3 weeks from the usual period. However this timely harvest yielded high quality grape musts, with good levels of sugars and phenolic compounds. An atypical year that will surely be remembered for the high quality of its wines. -
