Palmer Port - A

A Symphony of Tradition and Terroir

In the world of Port wine, where brands are sold and switch owners multiple times, one name has been part of the Vinihold venture; Palmer. Rooted in a rich history dating back to the 21st century, Palmer embodies the spirit of Samuel Palmer, a visionary trader who revolutionized the art of exporting high-quality Port to England.

History of Palmer Port

The story of Palmer begins with Samuel Palmer, a distinguished ancestor of the van Zeller family, former owners of Casa de Melladas. This historic manor, now home to Corticeira Amorim, the world's largest cork manufacturer, once served as the cradle of Palmer's legacy. Samuel Palmer was not just a merchant; he was a maverick, renowned for his unwavering commitment to quality and attention to detail.

Palmer wines represent Samuel Palmer's dedication to perfection. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, each bottle ages in top-quality oak casks, resulting in rare elixirs of luxury and refinement.

Drawing inspiration from Aristotle's timeless wisdom – "Excellence is not an act, but a habit" – Palmer wines represent the culmination of a lifelong dedication to the art of winemaking. Every sip is a tribute to Palmer's unwavering pursuit of excellence, a legacy that continues to thrive in the 21st century.

At the heart of Palmer's portfolio lies a collection of special category Ports, each one a masterpiece in its own right. From delicate tawnies to robust vintages, the latest vintage being the classic vintage 2011. Palmer offers an unparalleled range of expressions that cater to the most discerning palates. They even have a 150year old Tawny on sale! With a commitment to quality above all else, Palmer has earned its place as the "ne plus ultra" of Port wine.

In a world where trends come and go, Palmer remains steadfast in its commitment to tradition and quality. With each bottle bearing the Palmer name, drinkers are transported on a journey through time, experiencing the legacy of Samuel Palmer in every exquisite sip. As the 21st century unfolds, Palmer continues to be a shining beacon of excellence in the world of Port wine, a testament to the enduring power of passion, craftsmanship, and tradition.

  • 1. Quinta do Tedo's wines exclusively originate from its own 14 hectares of certified organic grade A vineyards, among the rarest in the Douro.

    2. Situated on the South bank of the Douro River, facing North, our vineyards defy historical norms, opting for cooler North-facing slopes to produce fresher Portos in response to today's warmer climate.

    3. Positioned on a peninsula where the Douro and Tedo Rivers converge, the vineyards benefit from a natural "wind tunnel," reducing humidity and safeguarding against pests and diseases.

    4. Opting for earlier pick dates, our focus is on achieving phenolic maturity and freshness, eschewing raisined grapes with high alcoholic potential.

    5. Embracing longer fermentations and softer extraction, our traditional lagares are equipped with a cool water tubing network, enhancing the development of complex aromas and tannins.

    6. With grade A grapes renowned for their expressivity, we patiently age our Portos for extended periods in smaller neutral oak foudres and barrels, shunning stainless steel for finesse.

    7. Tradition is at the heart of our winemaking ethos, with our resident plough horse Carriço tending to the old vines, and our dedicated vineyard team executing manual labor and traditional foot-treading in lagares.

    8. Quinta do Tedo's Ports, aged in the Douro Valley, endure more extreme climatic conditions than those in Vila Nova de Gaia, resulting in a unique expressivity.

    9. The hot and dry summers, coupled with cold and rainy winters, contribute to the distinctive character of our wines.

    10. Each bottle of Quinta do Tedo wine is a testament to our commitment to organic viticulture, innovative winemaking practices, and the unparalleled expressivity of the Douro Valley terroir.
