Quinta do Tedo: Crafting Timeless Tawny Portos
A Symphony of Tradition and Terroir
In the heart of Portugal's Douro Valley, where the first delimited viticultural appellation in the world took root, emerges Quinta do Tedo, a beacon of excellence in the realm of Porto production. The term "Porto" itself is a testament to the strict geographical boundaries defining this unique viticultural region, setting it apart from any other wine-producing area globally.
Unraveling the Essence of Porto
Porto, a fortified wine, undergoes a distinct process. The fermentation is halted by the addition of a distilled grape spirit, known as aguardente. This meticulous method preserves the natural sweetness that defines Porto, setting it apart from wines produced elsewhere.
Tawny Portos: A Symphony of Flavors
Quinta do Tedo is renowned for its Tawny Portos, a delight for enthusiasts of old, barrel-aged, velvety, and amber-colored wines. These Tawny Portos, aged between 7 to 30 years or even older, are a harmonious blend from various high-quality harvests. What distinguishes Quinta do Tedo is its commitment to a consistent and unique "house style," a legacy crafted since 1992.
The Artistry of the Winemaker
Jorge Alves, the mastermind behind Quinta do Tedo's Tawny Portos, shares his insights: "Beautiful color combining browning-orange with long tears of glycerol. Ethereal aromas showing great quintessence, and a serious and distinct balance between hazelnuts, curry, and molasses."
Behind the Scenes of the 30year old tawny: Production and Terroir
Production Details:
Year: A blend of high-quality harvests aged an average of 30 years.
Grapes: A field blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Barroca from the estate's older and cooler-microclimate vines.
Terroir: Schist soil, Mediterranean climate, and Grade A classified vineyards.
Winemaking Process:
Hand-picked, estate-grown grapes undergo meticulous maceration and foot-treading in traditional lagares.
After fermentation, halted by fortification with grape brandy, the Porto wine is aged for a minimum of 25-30 years in neutral, French oak barrels before blending.
Tasting Experience:
See: Caramel mahogany.
Smell: Black walnuts, chestnuts, and marzipan; molasses and nutmeg; dried white fig and mulberries; elegant, complex, and savory.
Sip: Black liquorice, dates, and marzipan; maraschino cherry and cassis; chocolate ganache and praline; spicy and almost savory, with brilliant acidity and a sharp, long finish.
Unique Expressivity:
Quinta do Tedo's Ports, aged in the Douro Valley, undergo more extreme climatic conditions, resulting in a unique expressivity.
Tradition is maintained with manual labor in vineyards and traditional foot-treading in lagares, ensuring finesse and authenticity.

1. Quinta do Tedo's wines exclusively originate from its own 14 hectares of certified organic grade A vineyards, among the rarest in the Douro.
2. Situated on the South bank of the Douro River, facing North, our vineyards defy historical norms, opting for cooler North-facing slopes to produce fresher Portos in response to today's warmer climate.
3. Positioned on a peninsula where the Douro and Tedo Rivers converge, the vineyards benefit from a natural "wind tunnel," reducing humidity and safeguarding against pests and diseases.
4. Opting for earlier pick dates, our focus is on achieving phenolic maturity and freshness, eschewing raisined grapes with high alcoholic potential.
5. Embracing longer fermentations and softer extraction, our traditional lagares are equipped with a cool water tubing network, enhancing the development of complex aromas and tannins.
6. With grade A grapes renowned for their expressivity, we patiently age our Portos for extended periods in smaller neutral oak foudres and barrels, shunning stainless steel for finesse.
7. Tradition is at the heart of our winemaking ethos, with our resident plough horse Carriço tending to the old vines, and our dedicated vineyard team executing manual labor and traditional foot-treading in lagares.
8. Quinta do Tedo's Ports, aged in the Douro Valley, endure more extreme climatic conditions than those in Vila Nova de Gaia, resulting in a unique expressivity.
9. The hot and dry summers, coupled with cold and rainy winters, contribute to the distinctive character of our wines.
10. Each bottle of Quinta do Tedo wine is a testament to our commitment to organic viticulture, innovative winemaking practices, and the unparalleled expressivity of the Douro Valley terroir.
