The Winemaker: Márcio Lopes
Born in Porto in 1983, Márcio Lopes was exposed to agriculture and rural life from a young age through his grandparents. He graduated in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Porto in 2006 and began his winemaking journey under the mentorship of Anselmo Mendes. After gaining international experience in Australia, he founded his own winemaking project in 2010. His accolades include "Revelation Winemaker of the Year 2019" and the "Tradition and Identity" award in 2022.
Quinta do Pombal: The Source
Acquired in 2015, Quinta do Pombal in Vila Nova de Foz Côa serves as the cornerstone for Márcio Lopes' Proibido. The estate is a hub for experimental viticulture, with fields like "Vinha da Sofia" and "Vinha da Luísa" dedicated to the recovery and study of native grape varieties.
