Quinta das Herédias
Quinta das Herédias: A Historic Gem in the Heart of Douro
Introduction
Quinta das Herédias is not just another vineyard in the Douro region; it is a living testament to the rich history of Portuguese winemaking. Acquired by Magnum-Carlos Lucas Vinhos in 2019, this estate has been in continuous agricultural operation since the 12th century, making it one of the oldest and most historic agricultural properties in the Douro.
Location
Situated in the town of Granjinha, within the municipality of Tabuaço, Quinta das Herédias is located on the left bank of the Távora River. The estate spans 109 hectares, with an altitude ranging between 250 to 470 meters, and experiences hot summers with minimal annual precipitation.
Historical Significance
The estate was initially part of the heritage of the Monastery of S. Pedro das Águias. Cistercian monks from Burgundy, who were instrumental in medieval European winemaking, frequented this monastery. The property still houses an old cellar with three operational granite presses and the Casa do Azeite, alongside stables, a wood oven, and a warehouse, all of which have been maintained for centuries.
Vineyards and Olive Groves
The vineyards cover 30 hectares and are planted in schist soil with granitic outcrops. The vines vary in age, with some plots over 100 years old. The estate also has 35 hectares of olive groves. Red grape varieties include Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Amarela, while white varieties are Viosinho, Rabigato, Gouveio, and Arinto. The olive groves predominantly feature Cobrançosa, Galega, and Verdeal varieties.
Vinification
The grapes, sourced from old vineyards, undergo extended maceration for better extraction of color, aromas, and tannins. They are trodden in granite presses, and fermentation is halted with cognac brandy. The wine is then aged for 24 months in old barrels.
Tasting Notes
The wine exhibits a deep ruby color, balanced yet dense. It offers notes of figs, black husks, and spices. The palate is elegant and fresh, with a perfect balance between fruit and tannins. It has excellent mouth volume, complexity, and a long, intense finish. The wine has excellent aging potential and contains sulfites.
Wine Tourism
One of the pillars of Quinta das Herédias is wine tourism. The estate offers scenic views of the Távora valley and features a small chapel and the main house, which has been transformed into a rural tourism unit with 10 rooms, a swimming pool, garden, and terrace.
