The Resilient Journey of Quinta do Bom Dia: A Pillar of the Vieira de Sousa Family Business

Quinta do Bom Dia is not just a vineyard; it's a testament to the resilience and innovation of the Vieira de Sousa family. From overcoming the devastation of phylloxera to adopting cutting-edge technology, this estate has been pivotal in shaping the family's legacy in the Port wine industry.

Early Challenges: The Phylloxera Crisis

In the years following the brand's creation, the Vieira de Sousa vineyards were hit hard by phylloxera, leading to a period of financial instability. José Ermelindo, the family's great-grandfather, faced the tough decision of selling the brand to replant the vineyards. The focus shifted back to the production, aging, and sale of Port wine in bulk.

Rebirth and Expansion

Quinta do Bom Dia played a crucial role in revitalizing the family's fortunes. The estate invested in new warehouses and equipment, propelling the family back into the Port wine bottling business and later into Douro wines.

Vineyards and Production

The estate is part of a family-owned collection of four quintas that span nearly 25 hectares in the Douro Valley, near Sabrosa. This strategic location allows the family to produce a diverse range of wines while maintaining quality.

The Cellars of Quinta do Bom Dia

The estate boasts three cellars. Two smaller ones are located at Quinta da Fonte and Quinta da Água Alta. These are currently inactive and are only used for special vintages. The most significant and technologically advanced cellar is in Sabrosa's industrial zone. Built in 2010, it features state-of-the-art wine production technology, temperature control, a laboratory, and bottling and labeling machines. It has the capacity to store 200,000 liters in stainless steel tanks and 35,000 bottles of wine.

Legacy Wines

Quinta da Água, near Pinhão, has a small granite press that, despite being unusable since 2010 due to its size, was instrumental in producing some of the family's most important wines, such as the LBV 2008 and the Vintage 2009.

Final words

Quinta do Bom Dia stands as a symbol of the Vieira de Sousa family's resilience and commitment to quality. Through innovation and a deep understanding of the land, the estate continues to contribute to the family's esteemed portfolio of Port and Douro wines.
