QUINTA DO SILVAL: A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE IN THE DOURO VALLEY
QUINTA DO SILVAL'S HERITAGE
Quinta do Silval, with its long history in the Douro Demarcated Region, is renowned for producing quality wines, both fortified (Ports) and still (DOC Douro). The estate spans approximately 22 hectares of vineyards, located in the esteemed parishes of Vale de Mendiz and Roncão, about 6 km from Vila do Pinhão. All vineyards are classified as letter A, the highest classification in the Demarcated Region of Douro.
The production of Port Wine by Quinta do Silval is centuries old, as is its storage in cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, promoting the export of its wine. The transport of wine from Vila do Pinhão to the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia was traditionally carried out by picturesque Rabelo boats.
THE MAGALHÃES FAMILY LEGACY
The owners of Quinta do Silval descend from one of the three branches of the Magalhães family, long-standing residents of the Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro region. This lineage includes the famed navigator Fernão Magalhães, originally from the neighboring village of Sabrosa, and Torquato de Magalhães, one of the celebrated “paladins” of the Douro and a former owner of Quinta do Silval.
In 1870, Quinta do Silval was already producing and selling Port Wine, bottled under its own brand, Torquato Magalhães. The labels, steeped in history, can be viewed at the Hotel Rural da Quinta do Silval. The recently updated corporate image of Quinta do Silval aims to communicate this rich history and tradition of both Quinta do Silval and the Magalhães family.
THE QUINTA DO SILVAL VINEYARDS
Quinta do Silval's vineyards benefit from a privileged location in the heart of the Douro Demarcated Region, the world's oldest wine production region. The entire vineyard area is classified with letter A and is planted with noble grape varieties from the Douro region. The vineyard plots boast a rich geographic diversity, with altitudes between 100m and 500m, sun exposure to all cardinal points, and shale soils with clay fragments, contributing to the uniqueness of their wines.
The vineyards at Quinta do Silval range in age, with the oldest vines around 85 years old and the youngest over 25. The main varieties planted are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Barroca. In the older vines, there are also the Tinto Cão and Malvasia Preta varieties.
TRADITION MEETS MODERNITY
The winemaking process at Quinta do Silval beautifully blends the traditional practices of the region with modern viticulture advancements. The family still maintains manual harvesting, while also implementing controlled temperature fermentation. After the addition of grape spirit, the wine is fortified and bottled, primarily in standard 750ml bottles, with occasional special editions in unique sizes.
CULINARY PARTNERSHIPS
Quinta do Silval's Port wines offer versatility, providing a delightful pairing experience for a myriad of dishes. The Tawny Port, with its rich tones of nuts and dried fruits, pairs excellently with creamy desserts, mature cheeses, and pâtés. The Ruby Port, vibrant and fruit-forward, is a perfect companion for cheese boards or fruit desserts.
THE QUINTA DO SILVAL LEADERSHIP
The leadership at Quinta do Silval is evident in their dedication to preserving quality and distinction in their products. Every step of the process, from the vine to the bottle, is meticulously overseen, ensuring that each bottle of Port carries the family's legacy and the indomitable spirit of the Douro Valley.
In conclusion, Quinta do Silval embodies a perfect blend of tradition, quality, sustainability, and innovation. Each Port wine is not just a beverage, but a celebration of the rich viticultural heritage of the Douro Valley. The passion and dedication of the Quinta do Silval family shine through each sip, making every bottle a testament to their legacy.
